            Do you know how many floors Soojung building has? It consists of 10 stories. When the time for class comes near, elevators are overcrowded with students. Some students fail to enter the elevator and cannot help using stairs. If human did not create elevator, many people would face uncomfortable situations. The present elevator that conveys people safely was made by Elisha Graves Otis(1811~1861). Through the history of elevator, how it invented will be introduce.

            Before Otis, there were many attempts to make luggage and people lift. The first trial was done by Archimedes in B.C236. He made an elevator in primitive form, using ropes and pulleys. In modern age, the study of elevator began in earnest. Many people tried to make elevator, however, there was a safety problem. Sometimes, the ropes were cut and people fall off the elevator. Even though elevator was convenient, many people worried about accidents.

            One man, Otis, worked in a company that made the frame of bed not drop off to the ground. After he resigned the company, he made his own elevator company. He kept studying how to make elevator safe. In 1854, he showed what he made at the international exposition. He let his attendant cut the rope when he was on the elevator. But he did not fall down to the floor. Many people who saw that were shocked. After that, people started to adapt Otis’s elevator to their buildings.

            In April 1931, Empire State building that is 381 meters and has 102 floors held ceremony for completion in New York. It adapted 67 elevators made by Otis’s company. If Otis did not invent the safe elevator, we could not imagine we go up to the high building. Also, we could not imagine people build the skyscrapers. Nowadays, there are many other companies making elevator. Also, most of buildings have elevators.

            Other inventions such as car, computer and smart phone are a part of people’s life. At present, people think elevator is nothing special. However, this is an innovation. Unless inventing elevator, people would be inconvenient very much. Furthermore, Unless Otis’s effort, people could not live this comfortable life. When people utilize many creative and innovative inventions, they should thank inventors for their endeavor.

            When you buy items, what are usually wrapped? Most of you say it is plastic. After you took the item in the plastic packing, you would throw it away into the trash can. Then, the trash would go to landfill. And it will sleep about more than 100 years. As you know, plastic bag is much harmful to the earth. To change people not to impair the environment, all people should help to solve this problem. There are many ways to reduce or change plastic bags. Among them, three solutions will be introduced.

            To reduce the plastic bag, the authorities in the world should make the law. According to City of Seoul, one person spends around 370 plastic bags per one year. The authority should make market places and many shops change packing into paper bags. Some big marts started using paper bags, however, others still use many plastic bags. If the stores that do not follow the rule, the authority has to impose fine. Such this law can reduce the amount of using plastic bags.

             Another way to decrease the plastic, alternative material can be developed. In fact, Eco-Sand Solution, a company producing substitute, designed a bag that is made from separable starch. This material takes much shorter time to be decomposed than plastic. Also, it is not harmful to the ground. Therefore, if the bag that consists of starch is used by many people, the earth can be saved.

            The other way to become free from the plastic, participation in campaign is helpful. Regarding to campaign that insists the world prohibit using plastic bags, Zero MiKa, a campaign in Morocco, started picking up the plastic bags and told not to use the bags to people. Zero Mika publicized their aim on the SNS such as Facebook and websites. They have enlightened people to protect environment. Efforts from an individual take start great movement.

            Making sustainable environment is not difficult problem. In terms of country, laws that urge many companies and stores to substitute packaging will change people’s life. Furthermore, technology developing alternative materials keeps producing new package materials. Lastly, many actions reducing using plastic bags can make healthy earth. As all efforts from every field are gathered, the earth will become a sustainable to descendants in the future.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

             Do you want to live in same days? If you want to experience the same day, watch this movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children directed by Tim Burton. In this movie, Jake, the main character, heard the spectacle story from his grandfather who spent his part of life in Miss Peregrine’s home in Welsh island. To prove what he heard from his grandfather, Jake traveled to Welsh island. In the island, Jake could experience “Time loop” which is able to fix the day to maintain same day. And the story started from the island.

             Most important event in the movie is to fix the day and protect special children from a bomb which Germany put in the Second World War. On the island, there was a house where Miss Peregrine and children lived happily. If the house got ruined, Miss Peregrine and her children would have nowhere to live. Therefore, she fixed the day and she and her children repeated the day. Also, in the end of the day, a monster appeared and it tried to attack them. Miss Peregrine always shot the arrow to kill the monster and she repeated the hunt as well. One day, Jake traveled to Welsh island and he found the house accidently. The children introduced Jake the house which they lived in and Jake spent happy times with them.

             Another important event in the movie is that monsters recognized where the Miss Peregrine and children lived in. When Jake came to the island, he experienced the crisis that some monsters attacked the house in Welsh island and he got to know his ability to be able to see the monster which nobody could see. The monsters found and invaded the house. Although Miss Peregrine, the children and Jake tried to keep the house, they decided to destroy the house. They were extremely sad, because they didn’t know where to go and they didn’t want to remove their house where they made good memories. Fortunately, Jake could defeat the monsters, because he could see them. Also, Jake could tell Miss Peregrine new places to move away thanks to the map which his father gave.

             In Welsh island, Jake could meet Miss Peregrine and the children. If he didn’t decide to go to the island, he could not experience the special times. Although they left the island in the end, the most of story in this movie happened on Welsh island. Therefore I think Welsh island is the important place in the movie and I was impressed with special and amazing island. Frankly speaking, I do not like the fantasy movie. But I like this movie because of the great pictures of this imagined island. I strongly recommend this movie to people who like the fantastic story and I want you to see Welsh island carefully.

What are the possible effects of geotoruism for Naju?

Have you ever been to Naju? It is one of the best places to go geotourism. Many people have thought Naju as just a rural side. But, nowadays authority tries to introduce Naju which has great nature. This region is the breadbasket of Korea and it has many heritage places. The possible effects of geotourism in Naju include developing economy and sharing the historical places with many people. 

One possible effect of geotourism in Naju is to improve economic progress. Naju is famous for the breadbasket of Korea. It has many special products such as rice and pear which are essential and healthy for our lives. Using geotourism, people who visit Naju can focus on the various farm and orchard. People can enjoy the natural landscape of Naju such as Yeongsan river. Along the river, there are many farms and orchards where they have special and organic products. If people visit this city with geotourism, they can see beautiful secenery of Naju and also have healthy agricultural products. As a result, the more people purchase them, the much money farmers will earn.  

Another possible effect of geotoruism in Naju is sharing the historical places with many people. The region of Naju is historical site. Especially, Naju was dominated by Wangun in Goryeo Dynasty. However, traditional mass tourism is not enough to see many great historic sites in Naju. Because many historic sites are not in the middle of city but in the mountain, mass tourism would skip many places. If many people try to visit hidden historical sites through geotourism, the places will be famous. Geotourism in Naju can make people think of ancestors who sacrified themselves for our country. In addition, it can make the hidden places become well-known. 

        To sum up, geotourism gives great effects. Many people who visit Naju can enjoy the natural secenery and healthy products. In addition, they can remind Korea’s history while they are traveling. In terms of Naju, through the geotoruism, the economy of Naju will be developed. Furthermore, hidden historical sites also will be famous and more and more people know the city of Naju.

 Hello, Nice to meet you. My name is Jungwoon Jang and you can call me 'Woony' that is my nickname though it is little bit childish. I am living in Seoul but my home town is Gwang ju. I think you may recognize easily my hometown when we have a conversation because of my local intonation which i really want to change. 
 My major is History and English culture and literature is my sub-major. I chose the English as sub-major to develop my English much. But it is hard to do, through this course i want to improve English reading and writing. I really expect this class because we can speak English and writing something by myself. Also, there are a tutor and classmates who will help me! Anyway, i'm happy to have the class with you guys and i want to get along with you. Thank you!
